Why Home Births Are Worth Considering

Here is a great article from the Huffington Post that addressses the recent post from Dr. Joseph Wax in the recent issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology
Why Home Births Are Worth Considering

The last paragraph is especially good:
“There is something to be learned from the centuries-old traditions of midwifery, and I believe that if doctors and midwives, including those who work in the home setting, could be willing to learn from and respect one another, women and babies in our country would benefit. After all, we are all working for the same end result: a happy and healthy mother and baby. Our differing visions of how to get there will require an attitude of cultural humility and a willingness to listen. Studies like the Wax study take us in the wrong direction.”

Gestational diabetes – because it is on my mind

This subject is near and dear to my heart since I have now been diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. Any of you who know me, know that I am hoping for a vbac from this birth. I am now being told that because of the GD I am no longer a vbac candidate. I don’t agree with him of course. I read a very interesting article today by Henci Goer.

Gestational Diabetes

The article confirmed what I knew in my heart to be true. I am not a type II diabetic. I will not have the problems of a true diabetic. Following my numbers I can show that I am fine. Unless medically necessary my baby does not need to be delivered at 38 weeks. I wish I could find more studies on women with more than one prior cesearean.

Choosing your birth team: Yes, you have a choice! | BabyCenter

Choosing your birth team: Yes, you have a choice!

A new blog article on Babycenter by Ricki Lake.  Her feelings mirror mine when it comes to making informed choices.  With my first birth I went with the OB that I had been using as my Gynecologist without thinking much of it.  I honestly didn’t know much about midwives or doulas.  I wonder now how my birth could have been different knowing then what I know now.  It really is about learning your options and making decisions that are best for you.  One thing I know for certain is that not everyone is the same and not everyone will choose the same birth given the exact same information.  And that really is ok.  It is getting the right information and making informed choices that are important.

The comments section after the article are interesting.  I don’t understand why some of the posters are so hostile about telling women to just do their research.  Most women I know don’t even know what a doula is.  The mainstream culture in the area that I live in in is not very informed on the more natural birth options.  Articles like this on Babycenter are great because they put the word out to women who might not otherwise even known that there was another option.  Having a birth in a hospital with an ob is fine.  It is just about finding the right caregiver that matches your style of birthing.

If you haven’t seen the Business of Being Born I encourage you to watch it.  Not to sway you towards my way of thinking, but to encourage open dialog and debate among women regarding birth.  Whether you agree or disagree with Ricki Lake on birth, the movie will get you thinking for sure.

Enjoy!
